Formosus - the exhumed pope (891-896)
Ambitious and vain, Formosus made enemies after becoming pope. Nine months after his death, his corpse was dug up and he was placed on a throne, in full papal vestments.
He was then tried for a variety of alleged offences, including the sin of coveting the papacy.
After finding him guilty, his accusers cut off the three fingers of his right hand that he used for papal blessings, and he was buried in a common grave.
His body was dug up for a second time, and thrown into the River Tiber, before being buried for a third time.
