As troops moved in, half-naked and bloodied children began running out of the school. Others were carried out by adults.

Those who were not seriously hurt were desperate for water. They were first treated at a field hospital set up nearby. Military and civilian ambulances, as well as civilian cars commandeered by soldiers, were used to take the injured to different hospitals.

Later, hundreds of bodies, many of them children, were found in the debris of the school gym.
