Tanzania: 690,000 refugees
Tanzania has hosted about two million refugees over the last 20 years, although more recently it has been keen to repatriate most of them.
2002 UNHCR figures put the number of refugees from neighbouring countries like Burundi, DR Congo and Rwanda at 690,000. Most of them live in camps and are not allowed to work.
Like most other African countries, Tanzania accepts the broader definition of refugee, which includes those fleeing war or civil unrest regardless of whether or not they can establish proof of a well-founded fear of persecution.
