More than 140 states are party to international agreements under which they are responsible for protecting those recognised as refugees.
While much of the global debate about refugees tends to focus on Western host countries, some African and Asian nations often host larger numbers of refugees. Some of them, such as Pakistan, have not signed the international accords.
Many states have recently toughened their asylum policies, a move which the UN says has sometimes resulted in a decrease in recognition rates.
