    France developed nuclear weapons in the late 1950s and tested its first bomb in 1960. It quickly developed air-dropped bombs, land and finally submarine-launched missiles.

    With the end of the Cold War, France scaled down its nuclear deterrent, scrapping a number of missile systems.

    France conducted 200 nuclear tests between 1960 and 1996.
