Across the sea
On 25 July, 1909, Frenchman Louis Bleriot landed on a golf course near Dover (top), having become the first man to fly across the English Channel in a plane. Inspired by watching the Wright Brothers fly, he created a monoplane that was to become a template for future designs.
Just one decade later, Britons John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown made the first non-stop crossing of the Atlantic, flying from Newfoundland to Ireland. The first solo crossing of the Atlantic took place in 1927, when American Charles Lindbergh flew from New York to Paris in the Spirit of St Louis (bottom).
