However, there was a falling out in the government between the leading Islamic figure, Dr Hassan al Turabi, who was arrested, and the President, General Omar al Bashir.
It is President Bashir who has co-operated with the United States by investigating and arresting suspected Islamic extremists. However, Sudan has still not done enough in the American view to justify its removal from the lists of states “sponsoring terrorism”.
