Sudan is another example of a country which has changed course to side more closely with the United States. It once gave refuge to Osama Bin Laden and a factory in Khartoum was bombed by President Clinton who believed, wrongly in the general view subsequently, that it was manufacturing chemical weapons.

However, there was a falling out in the government between the leading Islamic figure, Dr Hassan al Turabi, who was arrested, and the President, General Omar al Bashir.

It is President Bashir who has co-operated with the United States by investigating and arresting suspected Islamic extremists. However, Sudan has still not done enough in the American view to justify its removal from the lists of states “sponsoring terrorism”.
