Kenya suffered badly in the attack on the US Embassy in Nairobi in August 1998 and has been a ready partner in the war on terrorism. The US has called it a “key ally” in Africa.

The government of President Daniel arap Moi has helped track down suspects and imposed the asset freezes and other financial measures which are part of the arsenal deployed against al-Qaeda.

Moi, often under criticism by Amnesty International and others since he came to power in 1978, has benefited from the strong American support he has received since the bombing.
