Backpacks and webbing are used to carry personal kit. Canteens to hold water are worn on the Marines back, next to his "buttpack" which holds a first aid kit. The first aid kit contains bandages, antiseptics, aspirin and foot powder.
Food comes in the form or MREs – or Meals, Ready-to-Eat. This food in plastic bags cooks itself, once water is added.
Matches, compass, camouflage paint, a wash kit, are also in the kit bag, as is half the equipment for a two-man tent and a foam sleeping mat. Some non-standard items many Marines carry include baby wipes in a zip-lock bag, a Leatherman and Camel Bak water bladders.
