DETAILS ROLE
HMS Ark Royal HMS Ark Royal, 1089 crew - including 366 airmen and women Task Group flagship. A mobile airfield and command and control base. Can carry Sea Harrier FA2 jump jets, RAF Harrier GR7 surface attack planes, Sea King helicopters and Merlin anti-submarine helicopters
HMS Liverpool Three Type 42 Destroyers are being sent - HMS Liverpool, HMS Edinburgh, HMS York. Crew numbers about 300 personnel each. Type 42 Destroyer HMS Cardiff is already in the Gulf as part of Operation Armilla Anti-aircraft capability and Sea Dart medium range anti-air defence and anti-ship missile system. Also has Lynx helicopters
HMS Malborough Type 23 Duke Class: HMS Marlborough, with a crew of 185, is being sent. Type 22 Broadsword Class: HMS Cumberland, with 325 crew, is already in the Gulf as part of Operation Enduring Freedom Primarily anti-submarine role. Uses diesel-electric power for minimum underwater noise during anti-submarine warning operations. Equipped with Sea Wolf air defence system and Harpoon missile system. Carries Lynx helicopters
HMS Ocean HMS Ocean, 800 crew including 255 aircrew and up to 480 Royal Marine Commandos Transporter for 800 men, artillery, vehicles and stores. Can also carry up to 12 Sea King or Merlin helicopters, plus six more Apaches, Gazelles or Lynx helicopters and four landing craft. Capable of carrying and operating Sea Harrier Aircraft
40 Commando Royal Marines 4,000 including brigade support elements 40 and 42 Commando of 3 Commando Brigade, are some of the Navy's elite infantry. Amphibious rapid reaction force trained for combat in extreme environments. Lightly armed, backed up by specialist artillery, engineer support, landing craft and reconnaissance support
Aviation training ship RFA Argus Three landing ships, some minesweepers, three fleet replenishment ships, one aviation training ship, one submarine To support the key elements of the task group
