Sir John Hunt

A career civil servant rather than a politician, Sir John Hunt ended his stint as cabinet secretary the year Margaret Thatcher came to power.

Among the high-profile jobs that followed were chairman of the Banque Nationale de Paris, director of IBM and director of Prudential. He was also president of the Local Government Association from 1997 to 2001.

He was made Lord Hunt of Tanworth in 1980 and continues to sit as a crossbench peer.
