|Shadow secretary for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister - Caroline Spelman
Caroline Spelman has forged a reputation as a determined performer who is also voter-friendly.
She was tipped for a shadow cabinet post when Michael Howard became leader. However, she was first appointed spokesman for the environment and shadow minister for women - both were non-frontbench positions.
She served as shadow secretary of state for international development and more latterly as shadow secretary for local and devolved government, a role that David Cameron recast as shadowing the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
