Destination UK Born Abroad - An immigration map of Britain Born Abroad: An immigration map of Britain
Spain

Overview
Unlike their nearest geographical neighbours in Europe, Spain-born people are more widely spread in Britain than those born in Portugal.

Of the 54,000 living in Britain at the time of the 2001 Census, about four in every 10 were in the capital and just under a fifth of those remaining spread through the South East.

The university towns of Edinburgh, Manchester, Oxford, Cambridge and Bristol also had clusters in similar sizes to other EU nationalities.

The modest increase of 15,500 Spain-born people in Britain over the 10 years to 2001 was more evenly split than for other countries: just a quarter of the increase was in London, although some areas saw falls.

Map on right shows country as if areas with roughly equal populations were the same size. So, densely populated London takes up much more space than sparsely populated Scottish Highlands.

At-a-glance
54,105 Spain-born people were in Britain at the 2001 Census.

42% of that total were recorded in London and a further 18% in the South West.

3 areas of London saw decreases in the Spain-born population: Regent's Park, Kensal Town and Kilburn.

4 areas of Scotland all in Edinburgh or Glasgow - were among the most popular destinations for Spain-born people.
