Migration is not just about people born abroad – people also migrate within nations for a variety of cultural, family and, most importantly, economic reasons.
Of the 5.2m people born in Scotland who were living in Britain in 2001, 4.4m of these were within Scotland itself.
But the figures also show internal migration into England: Some 260,000 people born in Scotland now live in either London or the south-east. The north-west includes 108,000 Scotland-born residents.
Wales, the area of Britain that has witnessed the least inward migration, has 24,000 Scotland-born residents.
