Destination UK Born Abroad - An immigration map of Britain Born Abroad: An immigration map of Britain
Caribbean

Overview
The Caribbean is one of the regions most closely associated with immigration to Britain.

But while Black Britons are part of the modern picture, the founding generation is rapidly declining.

Between 1991 and 2001 there was roughly a 12,000 decrease in the number of people born in the Caribbean who were living in Britain.

The post-war "Windrush generation" of workers are departing the scene, either through old age or retirements to home countries.

Some of the inner-city decreases do not reflect retirement or death: Caribbean-born people are among the groups who have moved further into suburbia.

Map on right shows country as if areas with roughly equal populations were the same size. So, densely populated London takes up much more space than sparsely populated Scottish Highlands.

At-a-glance
254,740 people born in Caribbean countries were living in the UK in 2001, according to the Census some 0.45% of the British population.

5% fewer people born in Caribbean nations live in Britain than in 1991.

10 most populous local clusters of Caribbean-born people are in London and Birmingham.

13% fall in numbers of Caribbean-born people living in Wales is the biggest decrease of the 11 British nations and regions.
