At-a-glance

235,424 people born outside Britain live in Yorkshire and the Humber – 4.74% of the population.

18,579 people born abroad in the Bradford University area form the largest single cluster – a third of the local population.

4 areas have seen declines in people born abroad - Hull Marfleet, north Grimsby, Chapel Allerton and east Barnsley.

361 people in Barnsley East represent the smallest cluster of people born abroad in this region – down a third from 1991 to 2001.

Some areas of Leeds and Bradford have long been home to migrant communities, but other areas have seen very little immigration until very recently.

The region has seen its foreign-born complement increase by about 30% in the decade to 2001 – although it still ranks below the national average of 7.5%.

Drilling down into the region's facts and figures reveals some interesting stories.

The fishing port of Grimsby has a foreign-born population of just 1.88%. But within that, it's home to people from Denmark and Norway – trawlermen who stayed on after their boats returned.
