At-a-glance

280,055 people born abroad were living in the North West in 2001 – 4% of the population.

3,361 people born abroad in Liverpool Riverside North represented the region's greatest rate of change in the decade to 2001 at an increase of more than 100%.

24.1% of people living in Gorton West were born abroad, the highest proportion in the region.

322 people living in east Makerfield represent the region's smallest cluster of people born abroad.

The North West has been associated with migration for more than a century – first through the Irish to Liverpool and Manchester and more lately thanks to arrivals from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Far East.

In the 2001 figures it is the region with the fifth largest number of residents who were born abroad. The North West's South Asian communities form the modern backbone of this migration in a band of Lancashire towns running along the side of the Pennines.

Areas of Manchester and Blackburn are home to the most people born abroad, reaching almost a quarter of the local population in Gorton.

Liverpool Riverside has seen the greatest rate of change, much of it probably down to asylum dispersal out of London.
