The train was travelling at at least 100 mph when it struck a car on the line at an automatic level crossing near the village of Ufton Nervet, Berkshire.

It then derailed.

An off-duty police officer who witnessed the crash said the level crossing barriers were up when the car drove onto the line and then came down while the car was on the track.

The car was a saloon car with a male driver, pointing in the direction of the A4.

Map showing crash site. A minor road from the village of Ufton Nervet crosses the railway line and it was at this level crossing the crash happened.
