The UK's eighth most congested stretch of road. Acts as a diversionary route for trunk traffic between the north and west Midlands, and the south of England, via the M40. Also has heavy commuter traffic to and from the south Birmingham corridor. Also serves Birmingham International and the NEC, and provides a local Birmingham orbital route between the eastern suburbs.
Highways Agency piloting a traffic management scheme with electronic signing, variable speed limits, automatic queue and accident detection equipment, and support vehicles to ease congestion and clear incidents. Widening work also under consideration.
