Space shuttle: Return to flight

Tiny cameras are now fitted to the shuttle's solid rocket boosters just below the nose cone at the top. They will monitor the leading edges of the orbiter's wings to capture footage of dangerous debris strikes during launch.

The cameras will not transmit live footage; the images they capture can only be seen once the separated boosters have been recovered from the Atlantic Ocean.

Later missions will feature cameras fitted to the lower sections of the boosters to record images of the remaining areas of the orbiter's underside and lower wing surfaces.
