Nasa's Mars Global Surveyor: On a mission to map Mars

Nasa's Mars Global Surveyor is launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida on a mission to map the Red Planet.

Mars Global Surveyor has gathered more than 120,000 images so far and has provided tantalising glimpses of water beneath the surface.

Meanwhile, Russia attempts to send another space craft, Mars 96, to the Red Planet. It ends in failure when the space craft crashes into the Pacific Ocean shortly after launch from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, in November.
