The Launch

Mars Express, carrying the Beagle 2 lander, was launched successfully from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on a Soyuz rocket.

About 90 minutes into the flight, Mars Express was placed in the correct trajectory for its interplanetary voyage.

The solar arrays opened and the space craft made contact with Esa's ground station in Western Australia.

If all goes well, the 400 million km journey to Mars will take just over six months.
