The Race to Mars Europe's mission to Mars

MARS EXPRESS BEAGLE 2 THE LAUNCH ARRIVAL LIFE SEARCH MARS FACTS
BACK NEXT Back to intro
Beagle 2

Beagle 2 will be the first space lander since the two Mars Viking probes of the 1970s to look specifically for evidence of life.

On landing, cameras on Beagle's robotic arm will take close-up images of soil and rocks to look for interesting specimens.

A drill on the robotic arm will collect samples from within rocks while a mole will crawl slowly across the surface and grab soil from beneath boulders.

The samples will be analysed for chemical signs of life using a package of instruments on the lander.
