28000 BC The earliest human settlers of North America cross over the Bering land bridge and set foot on the continent for the first time.

100 BC The first known farming-based communities are established in the south west of America.

1000 AD The Anasazi tribe builds a complex cliff dwelling, comprising many apartments with up to 1,000 rooms in the south west.

1492 Christopher Columbus makes the first of four voyages to the New World. Sailing the Santa Maria, he lands in the Bahamas, thinking it is an outlying Japanese island.

1507 The name "America" is first used in a geography book referring to the New World with Amerigo Vespucci credited for the continent's discovery.
