What The Papers Say held its 46th annual awards ceremony at the Cafe Royal in London on 20 December to award outstanding achievement in journalism. Watch the programme on Saturday 21 December, BBC Two at 16:35.

Voted for by the viewers of What the Papers Say, with a resounding 35% per cent of the vote, Picture of the Year went to The Mirror's front page from 13 June showing the Argentinian team with additional handbags. The handbags were originally added to the Reuters photograph by graphic designer Carl Baldwin as an office joke. It found its way onto the internet and eventually came to the attention of the Mirror picture desk (having previously appeared on an inside page in the Daily Sport).
