They have to practice a lot. He used to discipline Andre with a leather belt. 10.19.43 Andre Voice over This is the same belt my father used to beat my bottom with. He didn’t hit me with the buckle though; he folded the belt in two. I won’t show you because it takes a long time to put it back. My father was ok, he never beat me up but being beaten with a belt is part of the Russian tradition for bringing up kids, I don’t think it’s particularly bad. 10.20.08 Music 10.20.17 Narrator In Eastern Uganda, sixteen year old Kamoti has decided it’s time to go through the ancient ceremony of Imbalu. Along with hundreds of other boys, Kamoti will be circumcised in a ritual that tests their courage and signals they’ve entered manhood. 10.20.32 Music 10.20.33 Narrator Kamoti’s family have special status in the community so he’ll be circumcised first. 10.20.38 Music 10.20.41 Kamoti Voice over What I’m really scared of is that during circumcision, should I tremble, quiver or show fear that would show cowardice and bring shame. 10.20.49 Music 10.20.56 Kamoti Voice over It would bring so much shame to my family and the whole neighbourhood. Nobody would like or respect me at all. 10.21.09 Narrator Kamoti’s father died a few years ago and his mother remarried and moved away. Now his uncles are responsible for him but he lives by himself in his own hut. 10.21.25 Kamoti Voice over This is my house. I built it with the help of my friends. When I finished building this house I was able to buy some of the things I needed for it from the money I earned from digging. I was also able to buy some furniture like this chair. I bought these newspapers and pinned them on the wall so when a visitor comes around he’s able to read them instead of being bored. I also bought that light bulb there. Most jobs locally are provided by the state. Masika Subtitle - Yes, it is. 10.29.50 Narrator Kamoti is a born-again Christian and the church says he should abstain from pre-marital sex but Masika isn’t keen to wait. 10.29.59 Masika Subtitles According to our culture, you’re supposed to have sex with a girl after circumcision. We need to get advice, to be counselled about having sex with a girl, about whether we can have sex before or after we’re circumcised. 10.30.19 Narrator But there are other issues to consider. Over a hundred thousand children in Uganda are living with HIV and nearly a million have been orphaned by Aids. 10.30.31 Kamoti Voice over I wouldn’t have sex with a girl even if we were to be married. First we would have to be checked for Aids at the hospital. Aids is a very bad disease because once you’re infected with Aids you can be very, very sick and people avoid you.
