American Cemetery
Of the five beaches in the D-Day landings, Omaha saw the fiercest fighting. The US 1st Infantry had to cross 600 metres of beach before they could reach the shelter of the sea wall. After hours of fighting and a massive naval bombardment a bridgehead was established, but at a cost of 3,000 dead.
The US cemetery at Coleville-sur-Mer is the last resting place of those soldiers.
