Most people know me as one of the judges on ITV's Pop Idol programme, but for 14 years I've managed to work in just about every aspect of the TV and music industry, much of it working with Simon Fuller at 19 Entertainment on projects including Annie Lennox, Eurythmics, Spice Girls and S Club. Since January 2001, I've been Creative Director at 19 working closely with Simon on future entertainment projects and programmes, and I'll still be staying in touch with them while I'm with the BBC.
I love travelling (always on a constant search for handbags!) and have my Padi certificate in diving. When I finally get home, I like nothing better than getting into the garden, even if it is the size of a postage stamp - who said it's all rock'n'roll?!!! |

When George Clooney asked me to join a basketball game on a studio lot in Hollywood, I knew my decision to become an entertainment reporter was certainly more glamorous than that suggested by my school career advisor - as a funeral director! The fear of that becoming reality helped me put up with horrible shifts and terrible pay in a variety of local radio stations, before starting work at Radio 5 Live in 1994.
For the past year I've been Entertainment Correspondent on BBC One's 6 O'clock News, meeting the likes of David Bowie and Sir Elton John. But this is without doubt my most exciting assignment to date! |

As a kid I loved Tomorrow's World (TW) and dreamt of being a television presenter, but ended up teaching A-level science and IT. Watching the first British Astronaut in space was hard for me. I applied for the job, but they took Helen Sharman instead... well, at least I aim high! My luck changed when I beat 11,000 other hopefuls to win the BBC Talent competition. I took a sabbatical from teaching to join the TW team for a stint as a researcher/presenter. However, I had caught the TV bug and decided... at 39 years old... it was finally time for me to leave school.
I like to stay in shape, mainly gym stuff, or running full and half marathons. Besides, you never know when there might be a spare seat on the space shuttle.. |

At 16 I served coffees at Terminal 4 of Heathrow Airport and would fantasize that some day I'd be jetting off to a distant place for adventure. My own journey began with a bunch of guys from Bristol with a dream to turn a pirate radio station into a commercial venture. That took me through the hard graft of local then national radio and then to TV. I've been both Health and Education Correspondents for the One and Six O'Clock News for three years. I can report on just about anything - from Michael Jackson's kids to heroin addicts - and I love it!
It's a far cry from the catering unit at Heathrow airport… still the coffee wasn't too bad. |

I may have tried on Elton John's pyjamas (custom-made by Versace), but it was in his sale and only after grabbing David Furnish outside the store for a quick live low-down on the spectacled one's style! I started doing live reports for the news when I joined the BBC in 1995. I've reported live under a parasol in balmy Cannes, under a brolly at the rain-drenched Baftas, and under spotlights at midnight from the Oscars. I've kept Sydney Poitier waiting, but he forgave us, dear man. In a former life I was a drama student which explains the whole thing. I'm doing daily live reports for The Morning Show; and can't think of anything I'd rather be doing after sun-up.

I'm only thirty but I've recently started taking an unnerving interest in thermal pants and anoraks. My girlfriends are all mincing about in hipsters and kitten heels and all I want is a pair of 70s hairy mammoth boots. I blame the BBC for messing up my internal thermostat. One day I'm in a nice warm studio presenting BBC Breakfast, the next I'm pounding the streets of Leeds and it's minus 3C. My bosses think I'm versatile but they haven't seen my chillblains! So apart from the weather, here's what's made me what I am: Horsham; gymnastics; the Minnack theatre; motorbikes; Nigel Slater; red wine and my family.
If you meet me, do say: "Isn't Yorkshire great." Don't say: "Crikey, haven't you got cold hands." |
