Once common across parts of Australia, the northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii) is now confined to single colony of 138 individuals. Scientists plan to create a second colony, possibly using females of a related species - the southern hairy-nosed wombat - as surrogate mothers.
