"Our previous president was a decent man but he was very distant. I'm sure Abdullah Gul will be closer to the people. He should listen to what people say.

"We want to distance ourselves from Europe and the US and promote our Turkish identity.

"Even if Gul wants to be close to the EU, most Turks don't. He'll realise that soon.
