Peter Scott, a member of the national executive of teaching union the NASUWT, said: "They should stop fighting among themselves and get on with governing the country.

"I suppose the best thing is for the prime minister to set a clear timetable as to when he departs. It is fairly important that there is a clear leadership contest.
