One of the year's highlights was sampling life at the hottest undersea vent ever discovered. The water temperature is 407C at this mid-Atlantic vent.

"It's very exciting," says Professor Paul Tyler from the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton. "I doubt we'll see water much hotter than that."
