The Mocness nets are pulled in by hand to the deck of the Ronald H Brown, a research ship owned by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

"The deep ocean is rarely sampled," says Peter Wiebe, "and we needed 8km (5 miles) of cable."
