The Chandos Portrait No other painting has had such a long history as a reputed painting of Shakespeare as the so-called Chandos Portrait, presented to the National Portrait Gallery in 1856. Attributed to the artist John Taylor, this simple image of a middle-aged Jacobean man takes its name from the 3rd Duke of Chandos, who bought the work in 1789. |
