Economic problems had blighted the country during the 1970s. They came to a head in the winter of 1978-79 - the "winter of discontent".

Widespread strikes famously resulted in rubbish piling up in the streets and dead bodies being left unburied.

An election was called in 1979 after he lost a vote of no confidence in Parliament by one vote.
