In pictures: Lord Callaghan of Cardiff
The Commons

Leonard James Callaghan was born in 1912 and brought up in poor circumstances in Portsmouth - his family of Irish immigrant descent.

After a spell in the Royal Navy, he was elected MP for Cardiff South in 1945.

He served as junior transport minister under Clement Attlee in the 1940s and remained in the House of Commons until 1987.
