Lifting the 'fog'

Infrared radiation can penetrate gas and dust clouds, giving Spitzer a clearer view of galaxies and the formation of stars and planets.

Spitzer also looks deep into cosmic history. As the Universe expands, radiation emitted by stars and galaxies since the beginning of time is "stretched" to become infrared. Spitzer can see this.
