Minke whale

Minke are the world's most-hunted whales. There are at least two species of minke. Recently, Japan has killed up to 440 Antarctic minke annually under a scientific permit, while Norway kills 500 common minke per year for commercial purposes.

There are no agreed current estimates of population. The IWC suggests there may be more than 130,000 common minke but considerably fewer than the 1980s estimate of 760,000 Antarctic minke.
