Zeta paved the way

In the 1950s, British scientists thought they had made a breakthrough with Zeta (Zero Energy Thermonuclear Assembly).

It was an illusion. Controlling the multi-million degree ionised gas (plasma) at the heart of the device proved to be far more difficult than originally thought.

Fifty years on, scientists think they can now crack such problems.
