In pictures: New World Heritage sites

The Shiretoko Peninsula on Japan's north island Hokkaido is "an outstanding example of the interaction between marine and terrestrial ecosystems". Seasonal sea ice forms at the lowest latitude in the northern hemisphere.

The area houses endangered species such as Steller's sea lions, and the world's highest recorded number of brown bears.
