The UK imports more goods than it exports, and during 2004 the trade-in-goods deficit widened to a record £14.7bn.

The high level of sterling against the US dollar compounded the shortfall.

Meanwhile, Britain’s surplus on service exports, such as banking and insurance, has fallen.
