The islanders are descended from the Uro Indians who retreated onto the islands from the Incas. Traditionally they lived from fishing, hunting and trading with Aymara Indians on the mainland.

Since the mid-1960s, however, when the islanders came into contact with the modern world, much of their income has come from tourism - selling handicrafts...
