Tectonic plates

The Earth is a ball of molten rock with an iron core and a cool brittle crust.

The crust is made up of plates which are constantly moving, propelled by convection currents in the molten mantle.

Areas along the edges of plates are prone to geological upheaval such as volcanoes and earthquakes.
