The BBC met with astrophysicist Darren Baskill from the University of Leicester.

A member of the Campaign for Dark Skies, he says poorly-designed lighting is ruining our view of the stars.

He says: "We want everyone to direct their lights down and not out - this would result in both brighter streets and darker skies."
