Iran has invested heavily in healthcare and education, achieving standards above the regional average. But it ranks 106th on the UN’s index of overall human development, well behind other oil producers Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, as well as countries with much lower GDP per capita, such as the Philippines and Uzbekistan.
