The role of religion

Olympia was one of the oldest religious centres in the ancient Greek world.

At its heart lay the magnificent Temple of Zeus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

The Greeks used athletic competitions to honour the gods and the games were just one part of a massive religious festival.
