Threads of time Silk has played an important part in the area's history. Spitalfield's was a centre of the silk-weaving industry since the early 17th Century. The Huguenots there worked as weavers, as did the Irish who arrived later. Now, silk saris are much in evidence in the local shops and streets of what these days is known as "Bangla Town". |
