This indicator has moved consistently in the right direction since the slump of the early 1990s. The workforce has never been bigger, and unemployment is among the very lowest in Europe.

Not everyone is content, however: in particular, there are concerns over the quality of new jobs, and the sharp regional variations in the labour market.
