Strong economic growth has not sent UK inflation surging, in part because retail and other markets remain competitive.

Consumer prices, which exclude housing costs, are safely below the government target of 2%, but the Bank of England expects them to rise.

There is upward pressure, largely caused by the soaring of fuel and other commodities.
