Safe as houses?

The boom of the 1920s was driven by hundreds of poorly capitalised investment trusts, which borrowed money to invest in shares.

The crash caused especial mayhem among these firms, which were commonly linked together in vast and complex chains. But the great names of Wall Street - Goldman Sachs, for example, or JP Morgan - emerged almost unscathed.
